Compatible with Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro, Avid, and OpenFX applications, like Davinci Resolve
Ya know, you just can’t be a good serial killer if the lights are always on. You practically have to be an electrician these days to go on a good killing spree. Luckily for you, there’s Flicker Freak.
Flicker Freak allows you to add horror-like flicker to your video. Doing the exact opposite of our blockbuster plugin, Flicker Free (which removes flicker), Flicker Freak creates a strobe light-like effect causing the video to flash on and off. This creates an effect similar to a malfunctioning light bulb that you frequently see adding drama to horror movie scenes!

While our popular Flicker Free plugin is celebrated for eliminating unwanted flicker in videos, we recognized that some users desire this effect. So we created Flicker Freak, a free plugin designed specifically to add flicker to your footage. It’s a simple yet effective tool for injecting dramatic intensity into horror films or adding a touch of campy fun to projects like office Halloween videos (though we’re sure your work is always top-notch!). As a demonstration of its capabilities, we even show it working in conjunction with our other free plugin, Ugly Box, for truly unique visual effects.
Flicker Freak offers several intuitive controls to customize the flicker effect. The “Freak Time” setting determines the duration for which the image will be blacked out, measured in frames. For instance, a setting of 2 will result in the image being visible for one frame and then black for two frames. To introduce unpredictability, the “Random Freak” parameter randomizes the “Freak Time” within a specified percentage. If “Freak Time” is set to 2 and “Random Freak” to 50%, the blackout duration will randomly vary between 1 and 3 frames.
The “Increase Freaky” control in Flicker Freak generates a mask that excludes the darkest areas of the image from the flicker effect, subsequently increasing the contrast of this mask. This feature aims to mimic the visual perception under strobe lighting, where the viewer’s eyes typically adjust to the brighter areas, making shadows less noticeable. For users who prefer complete control over masking or color correction, the “No Mask” option disables this feature, causing the entire original image to simply flash on and off.
